This functions nicely as a bucket mute. It doesn't attenuate volume very much when used as a practice mute.
The biggest advantage to the Softone mute is that it is light, soft, and easy to carry in your case or gig bag without dinging up your horn. The biggest disadvantage is it has a considerable effect on intonation, so you need to be ready to adjust position to compensate. Well made.

This is a great little invention which acts and sounds like a bucket mute. Instead of worrying about whether or not the heavy mute will fall out of your bell and onto the floor in a dented heap, or worse yet, scratching your bell in the process of clipping on a bucket mute, just drape the Softone mute over the end of your bell - instant bucket mute sound. It is lighter, faster to activate, stores in 1/10 of the space a regular bucket takes up in a mute bag, and very easy to use!

I use this as a pseudo-bucket mute by putting it on half of the trombone bell, and it sounds great. Also doubles as a practice mute (I don't use it that way since I have a regular practice mute that works better). Great because it fits so well into anything - bone case, mute bag. A nice addition to a big band mute arsenal.
