Reliable case with good engineeringOct 15, 2011
By nuremberger1 I have used this case only for about a month or so and long-term durability has not been tested yet.
This is a rather heavy and bulky case. However users who would walk or bike a lot with this case may find many benefits of it, as well as those who feel bit insecure about using very light-weight case to cary and protect your precious instrument.
Firstly, the interior of this case is well thought and may protect your instrument from incidents that designers of many lighter-weight cases may have neglected. The Bell is snugged fairly tightly in this case. The clearance around the lever and links seems large. Actually, any parts of the rotary mechanism on my Holton TR180 (B-flat/F/D) do not touch to the case when placed in it (but this may depend on instrument). The slide is almost completely covered by the protective part. These characteristics of this case would add some extra security.
Secondly, the strap and the hooks work great. With a 10' bass trombone, a Hercules in-bell stand and ordinary supply goods in it, the case is still easy to carry around in crowded city area thanks to the great pad on the strap, the center-of-gravity design, and secondary strap hook on the bell area which allows you to hold the case vertically with ease.
The original padded backpack strap is must-have option for those who would ride a bike or walk long distance with your instrument. The case is felt very flat and comfy on my back. The weight distribution seems right, although the weight is inevitably heavy. I found no difficulty to ride bike with this case for 20+ minutes on flat road.
Lastly, I have found two concerns so far,
(1) The hooks for lower ends of the backpack strap are mounted on the ballistic nylon cover without extra reinforcement, unlike the hooks for shoulder strap. This might cause durability issue in a long-run.
(2) There is no feature to hold a cleaning rod (if you hesitate to modify the case by yourself).
